Check Your Heating and Cooling Filter
Checking the HVAC filter routinely can support airflow, comfort, and efficient operation.

A clogged heating or cooling filter can restrict airflow and make the system work harder. How often a filter needs attention depends on the equipment, filter type, season, pets, and household conditions.
What to do
- Find the filter at the return-air grille or air-handler cabinet. Renters should ask the property manager if its location or responsibility is unclear.
- Turn the system off before removing the filter.
- Note the airflow arrow and the filter’s exact dimensions.
- Replace a disposable filter when it looks dirty, or clean a reusable filter exactly as its manufacturer directs.
- Reinstall it with the airflow arrow pointing toward the blower, then secure the cover.
Use the filter type recommended for your equipment. A filter that is too restrictive can reduce airflow, so ask a qualified HVAC professional before changing to a substantially different rating. Schedule service if the system freezes, short-cycles, smells like burning, or continues to deliver weak airflow with a clean filter.
