A little routine attention keeps a home safer, more comfortable, and easier to maintain. Use this list as a starting point, then adapt it to your property and lease responsibilities.
Spring
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
- Check window screens and weather seals.
- Look for signs of moisture around windows, ceilings, and plumbing fixtures.
- Clear leaves and debris from outdoor drains and gutters where safely accessible.
Summer
- Replace or clean heating and cooling filters according to the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Check faucets, toilets, and visible pipes for slow leaks.
- Trim plants away from siding and outdoor equipment.
- Confirm that doors and windows lock securely.
Fall
- Prepare outdoor faucets and hoses for freezing weather when applicable.
- Check door sweeps and window seals for drafts.
- Make sure heating vents are open and unobstructed.
- Review your emergency supplies before storm season.
Winter
- Keep space heaters away from curtains, furniture, and other combustible materials.
- Watch for condensation or damp areas that could lead to mold.
- Know where the main water shutoff is located.
- Report leaks, heating failures, or unsafe conditions promptly if you rent.
